About New Year's Eve Parties

The time around every New Year, I keep thinking at the way we celebrate the New Year ‘Bash’.

Madding Crowd for NYE Partying on Brigade Road
People irrespective of their gender do partying in their neighborhood hotels, bars and restaurants. People throng the streets in the towns and cities; In Bangalore, MG road and Brigade Roads witness the extremity of these celebrations. Boys and girls do flock, whistle, drink, dance and drive. When clock strikes 12 midnight, all their energy bursts in wild!

What to say about this? People are obsessed with things like numbers. For example,  Dates 1-1-1, 2-2-2… recently 12-12-12.... A dozen such dates came in succession. Now there is a gap at last.

New Year too…is just a number change. For this world, number change is utterly meaningless! It is just a counting for our own reference. 12 or 13 or 35 should not make any difference to this world. But people live in such boredom, numbers do fascinate mediocre minds. People have no eyes to feel thrill of this existence. They are totally blind to the miracles around them. Dawn, dusk, gravity, sun, stars, trees, birds, songs of the cuckoo, sounds of the water never amaze them! Just a number change fascinates them. What a fun! What a pity! They are excited at the number change and celebrate this by drinking liquor.

This kind of celebration is not our culture. In India we have our New Year during Ugadi. No need to mention that the plants, trees, birds do celebrate the Ugadi.  Indian New Year starts with the month of Chaitra on the first day of which is Ugadi celebrated. Nature is also at its best when Ugadi is celebrated. Ugadi signifies beginning of spring season. Trees which were barren till now have new leaves indicating the beginning of new phase in life. Fragrance of jasmine, sweet songs of cuckoo and the delicious mangoes mark the beginning of New Year.

I feel celebrating NYE intoxicated, is nothing less than a shame to humanity. Other animals do share this universe with us- humans. Animals must be watching us. What should they feel about us? Aren't we recklessly insensitive?

In a Night club of Bangalore, an announcement was displayed to attract female folk, “Liquor offered to ladies all night- free!”

People who drink out of proportions, live in this hangover, for days to roll after the NYE bash. Such acts have contribution in developing a mindset of culprits of ‘Delhi-bus gang-rape’ case. When the country is engulfed in sadness for the death of the Delhi brave heart, the people in Brigade Road danced in utter joy ‘for this number change.’ Our Students should not buy this madness!

In contrast to this drunken folk, there is a sect of people who work to make the society good. ‘Pyramid Spiritual Society’ conducts New Year Eve programs where thousands of people gather and meditate together. Subhash Patri Guruji steers this community for a transformation in the society. Let us join such groups and create a positive movement.

I meditated on the eve of New Year and wanted to share with you my thoughts about it. Thanks for reading. We shall resolve on this New Year to celebrate next New Year eve meaningfuly.
